princess,
I'm glad I was of help to you as well as dare `ia. Shyness is charming, but I hope you won't be embarrassed to ask questions.
As for people using the chat room for private chat, it certainly does happen. But it is a group chat room, so there's no reason to be embarrassed if you interrupt someone. (It's the equivalent of two people kissing on a park bench -- how much privacy did they think they could expect?) If it's clear you interrupted something, you can always politely take your leave.
The chat program has a private chat feature. If you double-click someone's name (in the list off to the side), it opens a private chat box. Discreet people, when they're using the chat room for something private, go into private chat even if there's no one in the main room when they start, to avoid being interrupted later. So if you ever enter chat and the people already there don't seem very talkative, they may be in private chat. When I'm in private chat and someone arrives, I consider it polite to tell them what's going on, so they won't wonder why nothing (that they can see in the main room) is being posted. In a case like that, you can either hang around in case someone else shows up, or you can leave, but at least you aren't keeping the others from continuing their private conversation.
I hope this helps.
